Reconstruction Sutton Hoo helmet faceplate.
I met up with a friend of mine, Greg the other day who was telling me about his experiences as a Saxon battle re-creator and it reminded me of a reconstruction I made a few years ago of the whole helmet from the Saxon Sutton Hoo ship burial, original in the British museum. This was made using card and foil, wire and tape and finished with a varnish and patina of age provided by boot polish! Alas the rest of the helmet has deteriorated but a nice reminder of that period when I did some workshops with school children making interlaced designed foil cards for christmas which has a kind of irony as the saxons at that period were pagans.
